Thinking Outside the Vox
So I've been playing with Vox for a couple of days now and am very
impressed: there's an enormous, robust feature-set underneath a
comfortable (though sometimes still a little confusing)
interface. I like the social features a lot and the app-like
editing is a huge step forward. The idea that someone else now
has to worry about server uptime and spam prevention is also very
appealing.
But... I've already got a blog. It's got hundreds and hundreds
of posts on it. Do I abandon it and move to Vox? What
happens to my existing archives? Or do I give up on the features
I suddenly like and stay with the old system? Vox doesn't have
plug-ins, but do I really need that flexibility?
I could split my time between the two systems -- one for, say, kid
stories and the other for all the other crap -- but that kind of
distinction should really be handled by categories. Using two
systems works against the centralization that is often the only way to
keep up. If I were just starting out, there'd be no question, but
I'm dragging a decade of history behind me like an anchor.
Where do I go from here?
Comments
The people at 6A have hinted, and maybe I mis-interpreted, but I thought they hinted that your posts marked "public" could be pushed to another site. It may have only been TypePad, though, I'm not sure.
I think we've all faced exactly that dilemma, and the short answer is that Vox will post to your other blogs. The APIs are actually really great and are already present, we just need to document and publicize them. It'l be trivial to say "mirror Vox posts with this tag to my MT blog" or to auto-post to TypePad.
We just don't want to talk up that stuff too much now because we'd rather underpromise and overdeliver, since people are always so happy to tear down any new effort.
Is there any planned importation feature? You guys have obviously well-trod this ground, but I'm still trying to sort it out in my head: Having everything in one place -- Vox -- would be my choice, but being able to render it elsewhere -- eod.com/blog -- would make it ideal. I could see not having anything public, rendering the public-intended stuff to my own site and interacting with friends via the Vox social features. Is that realistic?
Also, what happens to the ad-supported model if people start rendering their data remotely?
I DON'T KNOW I JUST WORK HERE.
Actually, I think we'll talk more about it as we get closer to launch. Suffice to say, we fret the same way you do. :)
Oh, I don't fret. I demand, often unreasonably. I'm a consumer!
FYI, Marc had previously imported all this TP posts into Vox... but not that I look they're not there any longer. Hmmm?.
If I take a liking to Vox, I could see myself writing about stuff here that I normally wouldn't write about at rc3.org. Stuff like TV, or sports, or general junk about day to day life that never makes it over there. I sort of constain the topics I write about over there, and it might be fun to have a more informal place to post stuff.
Rafe, where are you finding the "More Time" button?
Holy crap, eod is updating again.
I have been a VOX-er for about 40 minutes now and have had the same thoughts. Push from there to here or here to there. I guess it will be a decision that is made by all the SixAparters....finger crossed....
